Zinc Clad Extension, South Oxfordshire

Modernisation and transformation of private house

Formerly a dormitory, the building was converted to dwelling in the 1950’s, with various discordant additions and features being added over the years. The proposed design brings a new sense of harmony and modernity to the south elevation overlooking the garden.

The client was keen to have a simple ‘box-like’ design, and pigmented zinc standing seam was chosen to provide a pleasing contrast to the original brickwork.

Photomontage was used to explore the design and materials options.

The extension forms part of a wider package of repairs, alterations and modernisation works that have completely transformed the property. Addressing the least thermally efficient elements of the building envelop and installation of an air source heat pump and underfloor heating have greatly improved comfort levels and energy efficiency.
